2018 Hong Kong SciFest

A gist of the blog:

The annual Hong Kong SciFest opened in mid-March has attracted a large number of citizens participating in its wide-ranging activities. I am glad to have the opportunity to officiate at the opening ceremony of the large-scale event promoting public awareness and interest in science and technology. I am particularly interested in how the biomedical technologies developing rapidly in recent years help enhance individual’s quality of life, maintain their physical and mental health, and help our society cope with the challenge of an ageing population. In my Budget this year, I have earmarked resources to set up the Innovation and Technology Fund for Application in Elderly and Rehabilitation Care for promoting research and development of innovative tech products to strengthen the support for the elderly staying at homes.

Another significant purpose of the SciFest is to enable our younger generation to learn more about the application of technology in daily lives, so to help develop their interest in innovative technologies and in further studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related subjects, or even in pursuing a career in research and development. Resources have been allocated through the Budget to attract more and research and technology institutions and companies to come to Hong Kong, to create a conducive atmosphere for technological development and nurturing local talent. Other initiatives also include enhancing school-based teaching activities on STEM related subjects and expansion project of the Science Museum.

This year’s SciFest will be held until 25 April. You may explore the many interesting programmes and activities at the website of SciFest(http://www.hk.science.museum/scifest2018/eintroduction.php).
