Happy gatherings with the elderly and young families

A gist of the blog:

Last Thursday, I visited the residents at the Po Leung Kuk Wan Chai Home for the Elderly cum Day Care Centre for the Elderly. And on last Saturday, I invited more than 10 grassroots families from Tin Shui Wai for a gathering at my official residence.

I came from a poor family and I fully understand the economic pressure and difficulties faced by grassroots families. And I fully appreciate the importance of quality education to the future generations. The Government has been investing heavily in education with a view to nurturing talent for Hong Kong. In the 2017-18 Budget, I have earmarked $700 million for promoting vocational and professional education and training (VPET), facilitating the training and professional development of principals and teachers, as well as enhancing support for local post-secondary students. In addition, an allocation of $300 million will be provided to expand the Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship and the International Youth Exchange Programme, providing more chances for young people to enrich their exposure and broaden their horizons.

I hope to use my own experience and upbringing to encourage the young children to study hard and equip themselves for the future challenges. I hope that when these children grow up they will be able to repay their parents for their love and support, and to contribute to the society of Hong Kong.
